13go was born of the partnership of Drummer Aubrey Dayle (James Blood Ulmer, David Murray, John Popper) and guitarist Kim Ratcliffe (David Clayton Thomas, Ron Sexsmith, Holly Cole). The two have worked together in various creative projects for over a decade in the Toronto scene. They collaborated with bassist Brad Cheeseman in a group called On Topic for two years before the formation of 13go. The winds of change hit both of them, and this new group was born. Aubrey reached out to one of Toronto’s legendary bassist Ian DeSouza (Kevin Breit, LAL, Tabla Ensemble), to join the current lineup. He also enlisted his bandmate and friend from the James Blood Ulmer and Memphis Blood group, Vernon Reid (the great guitarist from the group ‘Living Colour’) to produce and play as a guest on the Upcoming release of the band’s new album called “Domestic Tranquility

AUBREY DAYLE’s musicianship began at the age of 5 when he started to study the accordion and the piano. Formally trained at McGill University and Manhattan School of Music, in classical and jazz percussion, Aubrey has performed in a variety of diverse situations. He has toured with James ‘Blood’ Ulmer, Hassan Hakmoun, God Street Wine, Sam Rivers, and Ernest Ranglin. As part of the John Popper Band, he played on both the David Letterman and the Jay Leno shows. He has also performed at Carnegie Hall with the New York Metro Mass Choir.

Aubrey continues to work with James ‘Blood’ Ulmer in a trio, The Music Revelation Ensemble, and with his Memphis Blood Blues band that features guitarist Vernon Reid. In ‘Blood’ Ulmer’s own remarks: “I play off his beat, his beat runs up and down my spine.” “My id: Featuring Aubrey Dayle” has included Vernon Reid as a special guest both in this 2004 release and in “My id: Jewel” (2012). “Live Revival: Aubrey Dayle’s My id with Vernon Reid” (2008) features both artists as well as Robi Botos, Rich Brown, and Michael Stuart. His latest work is On Topic (2017).

In 2012 Aubrey Dayle became gravely ill because of acute kidney failure. Early in 2013, he received a kidney transplant from his wife, Julie. A documentary on their experience with this process, Stay Aubrey! premiered at TIFF in 2014. Aubrey is once again at full strength.

KIM RATCLIFFE is thrilled to be playing with Ian, Aubrey and Vernon! Many paths meeting in a new place! When the band gets out on tour, things are going to be smoking on that stage! He’s also very happy to be part of the Come From Away band at the Elgin Theater, drummer Paul Delong’s One Word, the Walrus Guitar Quartet (chamber music with David Occhipinti, Ted Quinlan and Roddy Elias), and spontaneous improv with Bruce Cassidy. He’s been a member of the genre bending new music ensemble Hemispheres, and avant funk band Gotham City. He studied and performed with composers David Mott and James Tenney. There was ‘musical’ work such as ‘Chicago,’ ‘Hairspray’ in some grand theatres, and teaching in the music departments of Humber and Mohawk College. He has two jazz/rock albums with Aubrey Dayle, with bassist Brad Cheeseman as On Topic and bassist Calvin Jones in 3 Fold. All three band members have original compositions on these recordings.

IAN DE SOUZA became a professional musician 35 years ago, by his own estimate. He was born in Kampala, Uganda into a musical family and has traveled widely as a touring musician. Ian has composed, arranged and produced music for and with bands that include Sisters Euclid and the electronic duo, LAL. He has also produced music for theatre, notably for Anita Majumdar’s play, Misfit, where he was nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore award. His compositions include music for his wife, dancer Joanna de Souza’s Chhandam Dance Company, and also for film, as in Vikram Dasgupta’s award-winning short, Calcutta Taxi.

VERNON REID was born in London and emigrated to Brooklyn with his family while he was still a child. He is the founder of Grammy Award winning group Living Colour (1983) and together with journalist Greg Tate, he formed the Black Rock Coalition; the latter continues to work at opening doors and guiding black musicians into possibilities beyond that of rapper or crooner. Reid is celebrated for his eclecticism. One of Living Colour’s big breaks happened when Mick Jagger invited them to perform on his Primitive Cool release, produced a demo and even helped in getting them signed by Epic. Living Colour’s latest recording is Shade (2017). Vernon Reid is the producer of domestic tranquility and performs on several tracks including “How Much Longer?” and “Bloodlines.”
