Kim here, with some ramblings on the band. First, the name. ‘13’ has a certain intrigue about it. Joseph Campbell discusses it in The Power of Myth, and this was where the inspiration came from. It’s interesting to me that in various cultures 13 can have such positive or negative implications. It’s just a number. We’re choosing to focus on the positive. Campbell talks about its significance in American history for instance. Initially, there were 13 states, and on the ‘Great Seal’ the eagle holds 13 arrows in its talons and looks towards the 13 olive branches. 13 can also be seen as representing change and rebirth in a spiritual sense. Or it’s a baker’s dozen. I also like how the ‘one’ can represent our special guest Vernon Reid, and the ‘three’ our trio. For folks who may see 13 as a negative force, for the record, this is certainly not our intention. Sorry. (Have to get an apology in the first paragraph, it’s a Canadian thing).

‘Go’ represents the journey. Taking the trip together. Sticking together. A road movie.

13go & Vernon Reid Live in Toronto - Nice

The footage is of our CD Launch at the end of May in Toronto. It coincidentally ended up happening on the same night as Game 1 of the Golden State Warriors vs. The Toronto Raptors playoff finals. Vernon came up to play with us and the evening was on fire!

13go was born of the partnership of Drummer Aubrey Dayle (James Blood Ulmer, David Murray, John Popper) and guitarist Kim Ratcliffe (David Clayton Thomas, Ron Sexsmith, Holly Cole). The two have worked together in various creative projects for over a decade in the Toronto scene. They collaborated with bassist Brad Cheeseman in a group called On Topic for two years before the formation of 13go. The winds of change hit both of them, and this new group was born. Aubrey reached out to one of Toronto’s legendary bassists Ian DeSouza (Kevin Breit, Jesse Cook, Tabla Ensemble), to join the current lineup. He also enlisted his bandmate and friend from the James Blood Ulmer and Memphis Blood group, Vernon Reid (the great guitarist from the group ‘Living Colour’) to produce and play as a guest on the band’s new album called “Domestic Tranquility.

Incredible change is upon us all. Once again, the world is gripped by fear. Uncertainty, tribalism, and xenophobia are taking hold of many nations. 13go sees this change as challenging and stressful but a possible process to the inevitable positive change to come. The music of 13go has the spirit of a society that is the antithesis of all that darkness. The group’s honest devotion to a rich sonic palette, as well as its precise playing, will envelop you in something fresh and exciting.
